This Microwave Oatmeal Tastes Like Dessert!

I grew up on instant oatmeal packets—maple and brown sugar was my favorite. They’re nostalgic and convenient, but homemade microwave oatmeal is almost as fast and far tastier. These recipes take about five minutes from start to finish and yield thick, creamy oats without the preservatives found in many packets.

Making oatmeal at home is economical and gives you full control over ingredients and flavor. Skip the packets and customize your bowl exactly how you like it.

Microwave Oatmeal Recipe Tips

  • Let oats rest: They thicken as they cool—let them sit 2–3 minutes after cooking.
  • Taste and adjust: Add a pinch of salt or a touch more sweetener if needed.
  • Adjust texture: For thicker oats, microwave an extra 30 seconds. If too thick, stir in a splash of milk or creamer.
  • Microwave tip: Microwave power varies. Start with less time and add more as needed until you find the right timing.

  • 1/2 cup sliced banana
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)
  • Toppings as desired (extra banana, chia seeds, extra nut butter)
Strawberries and Cream
  • 1/2 cup quick oats
  • 1 cup milk (plus 2–3 tbsp extra milk or creamer if desired)
  • 1-1/2 tablespoons light brown sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon fine sea salt
  • 1/2 cup diced fresh strawberries
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)
  • Toppings as desired (additional strawberries, chia seeds)
Maple Brown Sugar
  • 1/2 cup quick oats
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 tablespoon maple syrup
  • 1 tablespoon light brown sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon fine sea salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)
  • Toppings as desired (brown sugar, nuts, chia seeds)

Instructions

  • Base Recipe: In a large microwave-safe bowl, combine quick oats, milk, salt, brown sugar, and cinnamon if using. Microwave on high for 1 minute, remove and stir for about 15 seconds, then microwave another 30 seconds and stir. Let sit 2–3 minutes to thicken; if you prefer firmer oats, microwave an additional 30 seconds. Stir in vanilla if desired, add toppings, and serve.
  • Peanut Butter Banana: Make the base recipe but omit cinnamon. After the final stir, mix in the peanut butter until fully incorporated, then fold in the sliced banana. Add any extra toppings you like and enjoy.
  • Strawberries and Cream: Prepare the base recipe. After cooking and stirring, gently mix in diced strawberries and a splash of extra milk or coffee creamer for an even creamier texture. Add toppings and serve.
  • Maple Brown Sugar: Combine oats, milk, salt, brown sugar, maple syrup, and cinnamon. Microwave and stir as in the base recipe. Let rest to thicken, stir in vanilla if using, finish with toppings, and enjoy.
