We didn’t travel this summer, and with the heat settling in, we’ve already broken our usual three-movies-a-year pattern. It’s only June and we’ve seen three films. We love movies, but at home I rely on closed captioning and my husband prefers to move around during a showing, so we reserve the big screen for major action pictures. That way I don’t have to strain to catch every line and he can fidget freely. Tonight, despite Tropical Storm Cindy dumping rain across Alabama, we headed out to see Wonder Woman.
Before getting tied up with house projects, I made a quick breakfast. I’m on a bacon kick and wanted fried eggs instead of scrambled. Stephen mentioned he hasn’t had fried eggs since last year when he was camping out west, so I promised to make them more often. They’re fast and simple to cook.
I have a secret weapon for eggs: a spice blend I sampled four years ago from Penzeys called Mural of Flavor. I misplaced the sample during a move and tossed it, but I made a note to buy it again. It brightens eggs no matter how you cook them—just a little sprinkle makes a big difference.
I’m back to a very low-carb approach with a keto+paleo mix, so I brought my own snacks to the theater, though I didn’t end up needing them. Stephen skipped popcorn too. The smell of buttery popcorn is tempting, but I didn’t want to break a four-day no-sugar streak. Jerky and nuts are great alternatives when you get hungry, but the movie was so engaging I never reached for them.
If you have kids, here’s a pro tip: movie gift cards make excellent teacher gifts. You can give any amount, and even a small card feels like a luxury. Our Adopt-a-School partner handed out cards for Teacher Appreciation Week and they were hugely appreciated.
Here’s a fuzzy selfie—apparently I need more practice with my phone camera.
Since we saved money at the theater, we treated ourselves to dinner. We went to Captain D’s, but had another issue getting a plate without bread—despite clearly requesting no bread and mentioning gluten-free and Celiac disease. The receipt didn’t reflect the request, and from his experience launching a Lenny’s, Stephen knows that details need to be on the POS ticket. Sure enough, my plate arrived with bread. He spoke to the manager, they remade the plate, and he watched them prepare it correctly. Next time I’ll order individual sides to avoid confusion. My meal was lemon-pepper white fish, a shrimp skewer, green beans, and broccoli—ask for butter for your broccoli.
Date nights still happen after years of marriage.
Happy Saturday!
