Turtle desserts are my absolute favorite, and I’ve been saving this Chocolate Turtle Slab Pie recipe since January. I’m excited to finally share it. The crust needs baking, but the filling is so delicious you can honestly eat it straight from the whisk. Below I’ll explain both parts and offer tips to make the process easy.

I’m a member of Arkansas Women Bloggers, a group of bloggers across the state. Each year we organize Foodie Friday assignments; this year’s theme was music genres, and the month featured “Bye Bye Miss American Pie,” which made choosing a pie recipe irresistible. For a moment I considered turning my Peanut Butter Pie into a slab pie, but ultimately this Chocolate Turtle Slab Pie won out.

This slab pie is truly indulgent—creamy chocolate, gooey caramel, crunchy pecans, and more chocolate. I lost count of how many times I licked the spoon or simply ate the filling by the spoonful. Fair warning: once you hand someone a beater, whisk, or spoon, they may start sampling straight from the bowl!

This Chocolate Turtle Slab Pie is ideal for potlucks, holidays, and family gatherings—it feeds a crowd and is surprisingly simple to assemble. Here are a few tips to make the process smooth and successful.
Lacie’s Easy Peasy Pleasy Tips
- You can halve the ingredients and make a smaller version using a 13x9x1 sheet pan.
- When blind baking the crust, placing dry beans on the crust helps prevent shrinking. I skipped that step when I was pressed for time and it still turned out great, but using beans is a good precaution.
- Depending on how large you cut the pieces, this recipe can serve about 18 larger slices or up to 36 smaller tasting portions.
- To make simple piping bags: put a zip-top bag inside a mason jar, fold the edges over the jar, fill the bag, pull it up, twist, and snip a corner to pipe caramel, chocolate, or whipped cream.

Chocolate Turtle Slab Pie
- Servings: 18 plus
- Difficulty: easy
Ingredients
- 2 refrigerated pie crusts
- 4 (3.9 oz) packages instant chocolate fudge pudding
- 2 cups chocolate milk
- 2 cups whole milk
- 2 (8 oz) cream cheese, softened
- 2 (14 oz) cans sweetened condensed milk
- 1 (16 oz) tub Cool Whip
Garnish Ingredients
- 1 1/2 cups chopped pecans (about 6 oz)
- 1 (14 oz) jar caramel topping
- 1 cup milk chocolate chips
- 1 (8 oz) tub Cool Whip (optional for piping)
- 1 (4 oz) milk chocolate bar (optional, for shavings)
Directions
Preheat the oven and follow the refrigerated pie crust package instructions. Roll out parchment on the counter and place a pie crust on it. Use a rolling pin to shape each crust into a rectangle so that each half fits an 18x13x1-inch ungreased sheet pan. Press the two crusts together in the center and press into the corners. Fold and crimp excess dough so it sits even with the pan edge. Dock the dough with a fork all over.
Bake according to package directions, about 15 minutes, and let the crust cool completely before filling. While the crust bakes and cools, prepare the filling.
In a large bowl, whisk together the instant pudding mixes with the chocolate milk and whole milk. Set aside to thicken. In a separate bowl, beat the softened cream cheese until smooth, then add the sweetened condensed milk and beat until well combined.
Stir the cream cheese mixture into the pudding mixture until blended. Fold in half of the Cool Whip, then fold in the remaining Cool Whip until the filling is light and uniform. Spread the filling evenly into the cooled pie shell.
Garnish
Sprinkle half of the chopped pecans evenly over the filling. Place the caramel topping into a zip-top bag, snip a small corner, and pipe a zigzag pattern across the pie.
Melt the chocolate chips in short intervals (start with 1 minute, stir, then continue in 30-second bursts until fully melted). Place melted chocolate into a zip-top bag, snip a small corner, and pipe in a zigzag pattern opposite the caramel. Sprinkle the remaining pecans over the top.
Optional: use a decorating tip in a zip-top bag to pipe additional Cool Whip around the edges. Use a potato peeler to shave the milk chocolate bar for curls and shavings to garnish the pie.
Slice and enjoy!
